A little more topical with the recent arrest in Bali of a British woman, this book certainly gives an insight into the jail she is possibly spending time in. Its always intriguing to read about how societies form in jail and the hierarchies that are constructed between prisoners and the guards. A different type of prison to the Bangkok Hilton in many ways, it shares the same drug culture and king pin mentality that exists in the notorious Thai jail. Its certainly a gripping read that has been put together from newspaper articles of events and interviews with inmates both current and former.

I enjoyed about the first third of this book. The details it gives are shocking i could hardly believe some of the things that go on in there. It was very intriguing to read until the same facts of alcoholism, drugs etc were being told over and over again. I stopped reading about halfway through, I don't think i missed anything new in the remainder of the book.

So intense and shocking, was in a trance while reading this the last couple of days

Kathryn Bonella writes the stories of a number of inmates from Kerobokan jail in Bali following interviews she conducted with them. The book reinforces the bad reputation of the jail together with the chaos of everyday life for the inmates.

It is no wonder that they take to drugs, alcohol or anything else they can get their hands on to try an eliminate the reality of being stuck in a putrid and corrupt environment. You do have sympathy for the inmates, even though they are accused / charged of various crimes, the conditions they are subjected to are something that would not be acceptable in many countries where they treat prisoners more humanely.

The storytelling itself is a little disjointed, probably because the text is interspersed with inmate quotes and excerpts from newspaper articles.

It is a fascinating read and gives an insight into life in such a horrible place.

The content was insane, the writing was hard to follow. Also I felt like I heard the same story multiple times throughout the book.
