This book is so hard to put down! Finished in a day.
Reminds me so much of the jail system here in the Philippines.
Wouldn't mind if this turned into a documentary. Hello, Netflix? :))

Super gritty story about a horrific and badly run jail. Persons jailed for minor drug use and put in together with murderous psychopaths, female inmates are sexually assaulted everywhere, and VIP prisoners are allowed to renovate their cells while others get to stay in cell tikus.

Bonella gives an empathetic light onto many of the persons in there for drug use - that they are normal human beings dependent on substances.

I had added this book in my reading list since last year. This book is far better than my expectations. I'm not surprised with the stories about corruption told by the author in this book. Corruption is one of the most common problems in Southeast Asia. If you come from any of Southeast Asian countries, you won't feel surprised with the stories of corruption happening in any countries within the region. But I do feel shocked with the seriousness of the corruption in Indonesia after reading this book. I couldn't believe it was so corrupted in the jail to the extent that prisoners can supply drugs to the outside and even can walk out from the prison everyday to enjoy their short freedom. I would highly recommend this book to anyone especially true crime readers.

Rating: 4/5 stars

I purchased and read this book in my 1-week vacation in Bali. Funny how this is a seemingly dark book and I read it by the poolside, on a hammock and when I had my Balinese massage. lol.

I didn't expect to get hooked reading this book, but I did. I got to read interviews and learn about the lives of the prisoners in the so-called "Hotel K" in Bali which has both locals and foreigners who got themselves entangled in heavy crimes like drug trafficking, prostitutions, pedophilia and murder. The insight really is personal and I appreciate that.

Although the writing became a bit repetitive mid way. But that's fine. I enjoyed it and it made me stay cautious with my bags while I was there that I had to recheck both my checked-in and carried luggages before leaving for the airport, just in case anyone slipped anything (such as the case of Schapelle - who has to serve a twenty-year sentence in Hotel K - only because someone slipped some heroin (?) in her bag at the airport).

Definitely not a summer and relaxed read, so don't read it while on vacation. hahaha

The beginning of this book really pulled me in as something interesting but by the middle of the book I felt like I was reading a repeating chapter. The book would have been better left at half length. It does describe conditions of the jail well and really humanises all the prisoners and their stories
