The Revenge - ⭐2.5 stars ⭐
I wasn't sure if I needed to read this novella before "Legends of the Fall." (I didn't.)
I didn't feel super attached to the characters or the plot, so I found myself skimming often. Part of the problem could be that I'd just come off a failed attempt at reading "The Sisters Brothers" and had trouble keeping the two stories straight. However, I think that a larger part of the problem was that the setting a/o the period in which this book was written included aspects that now come off as racist and insensitive. That extra half star is only there because I thought it unfair to give this novella two stars, considering how much of it I skimmed.
The Man Who Gave Up His Name - ⭐2.75 stars ⭐
I'd read that this was people's least favorite novella when compared to "Revenge" and "Legends of the Fall;" but, personally, it was my favorite. However, there were also instances in/aspects of this novella that felt icky -specifically sexual or seemingly anti-Semitic comments- that I again contributed to either the setting of or the period in which this book was written.
Legends of the Fall - ⭐2.5 stars ⭐
I've long wanted to read the book and watch the movie before it departed one of the streaming services I have, and I finally did it! Unfortunately, the over-descriptive writing style made me feel bored; and once again there were racist, misogynistic, and sexist comments that bothered me. That extra half star is kinda outa pity since I skimmed so much of the book
Movie Thoughts:
The movie was visually stunning. I may have liked it a tad more than the book, but tbf I am a sucker for period pieces and I kinda skimmed the book. However, I did not like the (animal) cruelty/deaths, and tbh a long-haired Brad Pitt just isn't what does it for me. It is ultimately still a movie that captures the overall plotline of the book.

Was not expecting three completely unrelated novellas with Legends of the Fall at the end.
Each story was unique, compelling and somewhat historical.
Legends of the Fall was to the point and very much like what I recall of the movie.
Not having read anything by the author previously, I found his style interesting, engaging almost poetic.

I got on a Jim Harrison kick after seeing the movie adaptation of "Legends of the Fall." I really liked this collection and thought another collection of his novellas called "The Woman Lit by Fireflies" was even better.
I'm rating this 4 stars because of the first two novellas, which I really enjoyed. All of these are stark, sometimes harsh, depictions of men in various "wildernesses" of body, mind, and spirit. I enjoyed the writing style and tone, and felt there was a nice contrast in each story. However, I felt a little bit like each was the same man in some ways; searching.
I rarely say this, but in regard to "Legends of the Fall," the film was better. And that's all I have to say about that.

3 great stories from a master. Imagine having so much talent that you take what could be an epic saga and leave it as an 80 page novella. I liked the 1st and 3rd stories best. I highly recommend Jim Harrison.
