I really enjoy Donal Ryan's matter fact way of writing. It would seem mundane at first but shows more a feeling of honesty in the characters. They are alway the simplest people you could find, nonetheless full of demons and struggling though life, still with a little spark of humour.
I really enjoy the relationships in this particular book, and got quite attached to the characters. The take on the travellers was a new theme for me bur again, I was impressed how true, in how are honest, they felt to me !
Easy read to enjoy, I could read it all over again

beautiful book. the writing is so beautiful and the story is so brutally honest. i feel like i have a real attachment to these characters and that i’ve been on the journey with them. it’s a sad story with silver linings of happiness but i feel like irish writers always tend to write beautifully (is that the right word?) depressing stories

Truly enjoyed this book. I loved the honesty of Melody, how hateful and terrifying she could be in her anger. It was written very well and I liked the characters very much. The travellers really bought action to the story and the affects of religion manipulate the characters realistically, especially as the setting is Ireland. Read this book. It’s wonderful.

I didn't know if I was going to be able to finish this book because it was very bleak early on, and every character was pretty miserable. But I am SO GLAD that I persevered, because somewhere around halfway through little cracks in the cloud started breaking, and tiny beams of sunlight made their way in. I am so glad to have been wrong on this one. Thoroughly beautiful and sad, but the kind of sad that is worth it. Ryan is just a lovely writer with great heart. Thanks to Cathy from 746 Books for sending me a copy of this! Y'all should enter the Goodreads giveaway on it, it's just really good.
