The final full installment of the Surrey SFS series, this book follows Captain Randall and Lady Portia Butler. Captain Randall worked in the army for over twenty years and now works as the personal bodyguard for Lady Portia Butler in order to protect her from fortune hunters and anyone who would intend to harm her in order to access her immense dowry. He has sat in on the Surrey SFS meetings, supports the work she does to help orphans and improve orphanages and admires her from a distance while being forced to stand at her side and protect her. Portia is cautious of men and their need for control over her life; she refuses to get married and allow a man to steal any control from her until suddenly her brother decides to go against their late father’s wishes and takes away his older sister’s freedom. Can this high-born lady and a Captain who is poor and is the product of dubious birth find their way to each other despite everything that is working to keep them apart?

I loved this installment in the series! The d/s relationship that was introduced here and the way that male submission was explored during a time when women lacked power and autonomy was very interesting and kept me engaged through every page. I loved seeing all the characters from previous books offer their help and support to the characters when they needed it, and I loved watching a woman triumph over the oppression of her circumstances.
