I always include major spoilers (hidden), to help with my memory  issues. Read them at your peril!

2nd in a series, but the first that I have listened to. Excellent narration. Set in Manchester, with a British dark sense of humour, and gritty reality about it, which you don’t often find in fantasy stories from other countries.  Stranger Times is a magazine which publishes weird stories, I think conspiracy theories and supernatural reports. As a result of whatever happened in the first book someone is out to
kidnap the powerful young woman who is hiding out in the magazines offices
. They are doing this by getting a
plumbing company
to
install a new bathroom with a hidden trapdoor in the shower
. Also several young men are
turning into vampires
overnight, with no apparent cause. People are being killed, the public is getting restive, detective Sturgeon has both his boss and a shady and powerful  “Concerned Citizen” on his back. He and the Stranger Times staff need to work out what’s going on and fix it.

Excellent thriller, funny, clever. Really enjoyed it.

This book was phenomenal - it is so rare to find a sequel that upholds the quality of the first book, and I think “This Charming Man” actually exceeds it. So many new characters and plot lines are added - there literally is not a dull moment. Very tasteful handling of the vampire theme, which has been done hundreds of time and yet McDonnell kept it fresh and relevant. I also appreciate that these books give significant story arcs to all manner of characters, including for example Stanley, an unlikely candidate for any notable redemption. Even the victims are given a chapter to show a bit of their lives so the reader better understands who they were, giving a feeling to the book that everything is constantly connecting and intersecting.

The mayhem continues. I realised one reason I liked this and the previous book so much because the characters take the situation seriously, while the author does not. I would have preferred more of a ... concluding ... conclusion, but other than that I really enjoyed it.

Love these books. Ciamh has created a gmail air and relatable world whilst also adding in the fantastical and magical. With humour and great characterisation it’s a great way to escape our real world!
