This was an entertaining story that would appeal to younger readers, as it featured themes of friendship, love and overcoming obstacles. The plot moved quickly and was easy to follow but the lack of build-up didn't create the level of tension or suspense that could have made the story more engaging. While the story had some charm, the plot felt rushed and it lacked the depth and complexity that some readers may be looking for.

It was a good book. I want to learn more about the world and see what happens next to the characters! The art style isn't my favorite, but I still thought it was pretty.

A sweet, enchanting story full of queerness, family and witchy magic.

The plot was quite lackluster but the art more than makes up for it, bringing to life all the lovely characters, like the grandmothers' (we needed to know more about their own witchy exploits!), Nova and Tam (tooth-rotting sweet sapphics), Nova's scientist friend Tatyana and of course, cousin Terry.

I especially loved that Nova wore hearing aids and the small glimpses we saw of their presence in her life and the workarounds required to practice magic with them.

I think my main issue with this book is similar to the complaint I have about most stand-alone graphic novels - there was so much potential to flesh out the story and not make it feel rushed, but instead of splitting the book into two volumes, it seemed as if the author shortened the story to make sure things would fit into one. I liked the story and the characters well enough, but it felt like we were dropped into the book in the middle of the story (Nova's parents, for example?) and it never really got resolved in a satisfactory way. There were so many things I would have liked to have seen with this book, but because we only got one volume of it, it seems like we got shorted a bit.

I wanted to love this… I really did. The art is beautiful. Really lovely, full color, well done. The story, though, was lacking.

To steal a line from Plumbella, “I’m a whore for lore!” and you get none from this story. So much goes unexplained - the magic structure; Nova’s dead parents who can apparently appear in ghost form, materialize to eat a meal, and then disappear at will??; the magical garden/zoo in the middle of the forest that somehow belongs to the Nanas, the “wolf magic” which is crucial to the success of taking down the villains, but the wolf character (Tam) doesn’t know how it works and yet somehow it magically (pun not intended) works out anyway? Idk… I like things to make sense, and so much here did not.

The characters themselves were cure. Nova and Tam’s relationship is very sweet. The queer rep was good - Tam is non-binary, Nova is some undisclosed flavor of queer, and Nova’s two grandmothers (“the Nanas”) seem to be cis-gender lesbians. I also really appreciated the HOH/ hearing aid rep.

The hype of this book was so worth it.  The art was stunning, the plot was entertaining, and the characters were lovable.  I absolutely adored this book, it gave great autumn vibes.  It was so cozy and wholesome but also intense and suspenseful at parts.  10/10 will definitely read again.
