LOVE LOVE LOVE the flip of the power dynamics in this one. The heroine is the billionaire and the hero is the guy who is helpless. I did not like the heroine one but for the first few chapters, but then I asked myself, “Why do I like billionaire heroes in marriage-of-convenience tropes but I’m uncomfy with the billionaire heroine?” It definitely challenged set-in-stone tropes and is very unconventional. I loved the writing, the character building. We go from hating both the characters to loving them. The buildup of their chemistry is slow, seamless, and scorching and the characters are all given depth wonderfully.

If you’re looking for a spicy read and spice is the only factor for you then it might as well by 5 stars. The spicy scenes start from the beginning of the book and continue throughout. They happen often and there’s a lot of variety. My review of 3 stars is mainly because it was a 3 star story for me. Angelina’s most recent book, Milagros Street, is excellent in plot and spicyness so that’s what I’m measuring against. I love experiencing an authors earlier work when I start with their latest book because it highlights the growth. This was def a spicy read and if that’s what you’re looking for then this is the book for you!
* For those of you that are reading via audiobook format, the narrator does a good job. The accents she does are great and it doesn’t feel too over the top.

*UPDATE 10/18/23 this author thinks being neutral and both siding a genocide is cute so that sort of explains the whole vibe I was getting reading the 8% of this book I was able to struggle through*
This book gives off viva la raza vibes and I’m really not liking it. Every time either of the main characters are described as beautiful or handsome it’s in direct relation to their light skin, eyes, hair, ect., equating whiteness and proximity to whiteness as gifts and perfection. (Insinuating that the opposite is unattractive)
I’ve seen many people promote this as a Latinx romance but the MMC is a Spaniard which is part of Europe not Latin America therefore he is not Latino and this isn’t a Latinx romance. It’s a Latina x European romance. The FMC is Latina but very obviously white or at least very very pale so the fact people are referring to this as a part of the #brownnipplechallenge is weird as there are no brown main characters in this book and therefore no brown nipples. It’s obviously fine for characters to be pale/white but for people to review and promote it as 1) a Latinx romance with only one Latino character and 2)#brownnipple with no brown people is misleading and not an actual representation of what’s in the book.
Also the romance aspect is bordering on dub con which I’m not into however I’m only a couple chapters in so I’m not sure how that turns out with the spicy scenes and I’m unwilling to find out.
Some quotes off the top of my head that rubbed me the wrong way
-“…pale, perfect skin”
-“…The complexion, the light brown eyes, the blond he got in his hair every summer, the stature and shoulders—they were nothing more than a lucky combination of DNA, gifts from his parents” (lucky?? gifts?? 🤢)
Bonus quotes that sounded a little to close to eugenics.
-“Your IQ is 152, mine is 138, and neither of us have chronic illnesses in our families. We can create an exceptional child…”
-“These tests are just a formality. We’ve tested your father and sister and there were no genetic surprises“ (in reference to why she chose him as his “sperm donor”)
-“We’re testing for anything that might make the Golden Prince a less-than-ideal specimen to impregnate me.”
