This was the one I read and reread a million times as a little girl with a flashlight up past her bedtime. I do not know that it holds up as well as some of the other books, but I still cried with the final moments that Laura spends with her family, and she revisits the journey that brought them to DeSmet. Dylan enjoyed it for a little one who has never liked romance of any kind.

I finished up my reread of this series today. It's just comforting, to read those old childhood favorites with new eyes. My heart still skips a beat when Almanzo asks Laura if he can see her home that first time! I still get scared with Laura during her first teaching job (how awful was that Mrs Brewster?!)

I chalk a lot of how good I did in certain classes in school to stories like these, and wish more kids today were still reading them.

ETA 2017: I think that, in spite of this series not being romance, that Almanzo Wilder is one of my top most romantic males. He's sweet and caring, and he lets Laura be Laura. He keeps fetching her from school, even after she tells him she's not interested, and then keeps on trying after the school thing is all done! And he lets Laura drive his crazy, half broken horses!

A great conclusion to a great series of books! It was a lot of fun watching Laura and Mary grow into accomplished, hard working, and intelligent women. I also really enjoyed reading about Laura's courtship with Almanzo, and her experiences as a school teacher. I love these books!

One of my favorite series as a kid! For a year I was even signed up with scholastic where I received the whole series in paperback and got to do little fun crafts and things. :) I've watched COUNTLESS episodes with my mother and had fun comparing the books to the show. This series will always hold a special place in my heart.

Nearly 40 years after starting it, I completed this series, reading it to my own children after stalling at the fifth book as a child. Perhaps The Long Winter was too gruelling for ten year old, or the changing concerns of a maturing Laura weren't as interesting to a young boy who'd just seen Star Wars for the first time. Wonderful to read again and appreciate in a whole new way.
