This is the only book that has ever made me physically uncomfortable. I remember this story and the lessons from it to this day. We read it for a college course, it is the only required material I’ve kept from college. Beautifully written.

I feel ill and sad and know with too much certainty that I did not absorb everything I needed to. But I will digest what I did absorb. Deserving of a second read.

What a powerful quick read. Morrison’s prose delivers what I have come to expect. Beyond an incredible literary work, this is anti-racism done right. Bluest Eye does not talk down to its audience, preach piously, or deliver simplified morality. The characters are rich complex and flawed.

This book contains child rape, abuse and violence. For a story about Pecola, her narrative is told by every, but her. Black peoples’ stories are told by so many others and narratives forced on them. Brace yourself for this read but it is worth the effort.
