The very best things in life are born of difficulty. Whatever comes too easily is easily abandoned

Goddammit.

The first book of this series was quite nice. Yes, it did use a lot of tropes common in its genre and didn't take many risks, but the prose was wonderful and the story enjoyable.

The prose in the sequel is no worse than in the first book. Amy Harmon really shines here, almost showing off. But if you dig deeper, past that layer of glossiness in the writing, you find some serious issues.
I was only a fourth into this novel when I noticed that things were moving very fast. Any reader of the first book would imagine that Kjell's inner confict is about denial. Denial of his Gift, his background and his emotions. And yet, even though we see him thinking about these things, he lacks self control. He seemingly falls in love with this girl he only just met. In one week.
No matter how cliche the first book's romance felt (which isn't a bad thing), there was always a lot of authenticity in it. The characters acted like a real couple of young adults falling in love. Meanwhile, the love interest in The Queen And The Cure is emotionally unstable and extreme. And Kjell, a grown ass man, falls for her in a week. Could it be lazy writing?
I also had a problem with how much time the author wastes on this unrealistic romance. It made this feel more like a romance novel than a fantasy novel. You should avoid this book if you're not keen on the idea of reading many many paragraphs just about kissing.
It did start to pick up about half way through. It started being genuinely interesting.
But somehow I was still burned out from this silliness. Subconsciously I avoided reading after a while. And I forced myself to continue in hope for a solid ending.
At the end of the day this is just a watered-down romance with some fantasy imagery thrown in. It offers no real surprises or suspense. While it has all the basics that a fantasy novel needs, the author doesn't bother to explore and delve into the world, and prefers to focus on the romantic aspect. So if you're into that, you're probably a lot more likely to enjoy this.

How did I go from 5 stars for the bird and the sword to one on this book? This was so terrible. I had to FORCE FINISH it. It took me ages to read despite being very short.

Everything in this book felt clichéd and SO DULL. The plot felt cheesy and the two MCs were too easily “set up.” Then the only thing that might keep them apart was resolved in the most predictable, boring way possible. And tbh they had such little character development that I didn’t care whether or not they ended up together. I didn’t care about what happened at all— hence why I had to force myself to read it despite not enjoying it.

Should I have just stopped reading? YES OF COURSE BUT MY MAMA DIDN’T RAISE A QUITTER so here I am. I did it, but it was a waste of time and I don’t recommend it.

Lovely writing! I enjoyed this a bit less than book 1, but still a great story. Amy Harmon's writing is among my favorites.

Eh, not bad, but not as good as the first one. It just didn't seem to move along as nicely.

Sorry guys...I really just couldn't get into this one. I LOVED [b:The Bird and the Sword|29008738|The Bird and the Sword (The Bird and the Sword Chronicles, #1)|Amy Harmon|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1462457112s/29008738.jpg|49250534] and was so excited to read Kjell's story, but I just couldn't maintain my interest. There was no explaination for why Kjell fell in love with Sasha, or why certain things were happening. It was very insta-lovey and insta-love is not my thing. Also, I get the need to maintain an air of mystery, but this was boarderline plain confusing. This was the first book of Amy Harmon's I wasn't able to get on board with.
