The book was all over the place—in an admittedly entertaining way—but by the end, I felt like we hadn’t made much progress. I loved the concept of a magical HBCU and following Maggie as she uncovers more about her background… but that never really happened. Instead, we got a flood of new characters, a lot of random and seemingly pointless scenes, and no real plot driving things forward. I get that it’s the first book in a series, but I still walked away with almost no clarity on what was going on. The main characters seemed willfully ignorant to the fact that they’d stepped into a whole new world with its own rules, and their stubbornness made it harder to connect with them. That said, it was entertaining enough that I’ll probably continue the series just to see if it eventually delivers on that magical HBCU promise.

I know I am not the target audience for this book but OMG did I love it. Now I understand why peolle said it was True Blood mixed with Harry Potter and it’s so good. The characters, the set up, the world, the multiple POVs. I loved it all. This book ended on a cliffhanger so I am immediately diving it’s the next book!
I also discovered the audiobook halfway through reading and it just added to the experience!
