An ambitious novel with so much potential, but very poorly executed. After reading over 400+ pages I still can’t tell you what the main conflict of the book/series is, and that’s a problem.

I wanted to like this book so badly. This story had so much potential which makes it all the more disappointing. There is a lot of sexual assault culture in the book that's strange and almost every man is either a rapist or seems like a stone throw away from being one.

There is no plot development. I didn't even know this was a murder mystery until the last few pages of the book. There is also no real character development... so that's....fun.

The book is written like editors do not exist. There are so many typos and descriptions that don't make sense; a lot of words for words sake and a lot of repetitive phrasing and contradictory scenes.

Lastly, the writer seems to be trying too hard to remind us that the characters are black and too much of the writing feels like an exaggeration of black stereotypes.

I probably won't be reading book 2.

This book caught my attention by having a magical, mythical HBCU! From the first few chapters how this group of elite people was described, I was intrigued. As time progressed and they were settled into the school, the storyline fell a little flat for me (hence why it took me so long to finish this). Then bout 5 chapters to the end, it started getting interesting again. This book deals with witches, sirens, a man turned into a cat, vampires, werewolves, and so much more. This gave Zodiac Academy but the Black version. Certain things the characters was doing was questionable since these are supposed to be grown adults but they acting like teenagers. I read this with my book crew and they want to read the second one. If it wasn’t for them, I would let Drew Collin’s rest right here. Hopefully the second one keeps my attention throughout the book.

This book really can get you hooked. The way that they write makes you want to eat it up. It made me feel like I was reading the Different World version of Harry Potter. Can't wait to read the second book to read more about the characters.
