This is such a sweet story. The Rankin and Bass production based on this book has been my favorite Christmas movie for as long as I can remember, and the book is just as wonderful, if not better. I'm glad I finally got around to reading it. Even a Grinch like me can't help but love this magical twist on the origin story of Santa Claus.

4.5 stars! Extremely sweet (occasionally overly so) and a bit boring/slow in parts, but overall a lot of fun and a must read for anyone who is (like me) a fan of Christmas/Santa lore and mythology.

This was a long drawn out book.

It was very detailed about how Santa Claus came to be who we know and love.

This could be a good book to read to children during the month of December.

Hello, do you just want to enjoy your damn Christmas presents and not stress about commercialism and materialism and conflict? Have this book. It's very nice.

(WHY SANTA? WHY DID YOU GIVE THE TOYS TO THE SHOPKEEPERS?)

Didn't care for this. Really seemed like the message was "give a kid a toy and their sadness will be ended." Kids even traveled a ways expecting free stuff. Really seemed too focused on having stuff to make you happy.

I did not expect to love this as much as I did. But I really enjoyed this origin story of Santa Claus. I highly recommend reading it if you want a quick, enjoyable and festive read.

To be read only on Christmas & Christmas Eve. :)
It makes for a delightful, jolly read that will leave you fuzzier on the inside. The last few pages were so endearing that I almost shed a tear. It brought back a lot of memories about things that I used to unawarely like about Baum's imagination when I was a kid and read 'The Wizard of Oz'. The part about the pagan origins of Santa Claus is beautifully depicted.
My copy of this book is from the Penguin Christmas Classics collection and it looks absolutely stunning.
Merry Christmas! :)
