I read this book every Christmas season because of the joy the story bring. Frank Baum story of The Life and Adventures of Santa Clause is a story for all ages and brings Santa to life. I recommend it to everyone.
A non-traditional tale of the origins of Santa Claus told with the same charming, odd, and eccentric style as the Oz tales, though more saccharin. Chronologically, I believe this story was independent of Oz, although Baum incorporated the locale into the greater Oz in some of the later stories. I enjoyed this novella for its uniqueness and recommend it.
“But kindly deeds are sure to bring fame, and fame has many wings to carry its tidings into far lands; so for miles and miles in every direction, people were talking of Claus and his wonderful gifts to children. The sweet generousness of his work caused a few selfish folk to sneer, but even these were forced to admit their respect for a man so gentle-natured that he loved to devote his life to pleasing the helpless little ones of his race.”
This is a wonderful, magical, delightful little book! It’s filled with immortal creatures both familiar and strange. The story of how Claus, a human raised by Wood Nymphs in the forest of Burzee, became the immortal Santa Claus bringing joy to every child on Christmas Eve night, is filled with joy and trials and helpers and love. We learn about how he began making toys, how reindeer first pulled his sledge, how he used chimneys to enter homes, how the first stockings were hung and Christmas trees erected. It’s all here and told with a wink and a twinkle and great affection.
“And all the little ones loved him dearly; and the fathers and mothers honored him for the happiness he had given them when they too were young; and the aged grandsires and granddames remembered him with tender gratitude and blessed his name.”

Okay, this is a really sweet holiday book that I've never heard of! It's basically the origin story for Santa Claus and I love how he is saved as a human baby by the Immortals, raised by them, and eventually becomes the immortal Santa Claus we all know and love. I love how the reindeer become part of the mythology and how parents also become Santa's elves/helpers! This is a story I can see myself listening to annually!

The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus is written by one the most well known children's author; the man who created the world of Oz. L. Frank Baum is a household name, but I had never read any of his stories before. This book chronicles the life of Santa from his birth to the iconic figure we know today. How does one become Santa Claus? Is he human or some sort of God? L. Frank Baum is able to answer all those questions for readers in a way that both appeals to young children and adults.
As a non-American, I never really grew up with the idea that Santa Claus was real, but reading this book made me wish that I did. L. Frank Baum is so creative and original with his take on Santa and somehow, even though it involves magic and fairies, it seems to make so much sense. As a child, I would have believed this whole story and as an adult, I just fell in love with the easy way of reading it and the creativity on every single page. Baum knows how to entice an audience and how to keep throwing in unexpected plot turns.
This book is the definition of Christmas in my opinion; there is Santa, snow, reindeers, happy children, magic, toys, forgiveness, love,... Absolutely everything you can expect from a traditional Christmas story. There is no romance technically, but the love Santa has for making children happy is more beautiful than any romance storyline could be.
I absolutely adore this book and I can't wait to make it a tradition and read this story every single year - and urge everyone I know to do the same. If you read this, I guarantee you'll feel like Christmas has really started.
