I first read this back in the 90s. I've decided to embark on a Noon-wide reread, and I'll be writing about them as I go.
Vurt is set in a world where the five pure forms of life-- Humans, Robos, Shadows, Dogs and Vurts--all started having sex in Manchester, creating crazy new hybrid lifeforms, and going on other-dimensional drug trips by sticking coloured Vurt feathers down their throats.
The main character, Scribble, lost his sister while on one of those Vurt trips and really wants her back because of incest. He and his mates cruise Manchester in a shitty old van with The Thing, the alien life form made of pure drugs that the Vurt world gave Scribble in exchange for his sister.
The cops are made out of smoke, you hit dreamsnakes with hammers (the fuckers cause bad trips), the world's foremost authority on Vurt feathers is the mysterious Game Cat (also present to explain world rules to the reader in interstitial chapters) and pretty much everyone is fine with fucking dogs because: see the third paragraph. Sexy times are for any sets of parts that can fit together in Vurt.

Entertaining and creative, in ways, but overreaching in others. Characters fall flat and are uninteresting at best, while unique ideas get lost in convoluted attempts at futuristic-drug-addled-quirkiness.
