This legit dragged on and on for me, though there are some parts that I enjoyed. Good ending sentence. However, I think the translation felt awkward in some places. If I decide to read another book of hers I'll try to get an Arabic translation to compare.
Woooof this was hard to get through. I listened to it and it kept going on and on. Some of the language was beautiful and other parts were very strangely translated.

This was one of the most heartfelt, bittersweet, phenomenal, and human novels that I have ever read. It is heavily based off of the author's own experience as a girl who moved from the country to work in a factory and attend high school night classes. The book is structured as partially in the past about (1978-80) and the present (1995) as the MC begins to write about her experiences This is so palpable throughout the novel as we view little vignettes about the character's, and I imagine the author's, experiences in this situation.

the often repetitions of specific phrases distracted me from the nostalgic passages and the overarching sadness of this beautiful novel
absolutely loved the book!
sadly, the editing (English Edition, Paperback, 2016) gets really sloppy towards the end - quite a lot of typos.

I picked this book off my shelf, where it's been for quite some time; one of those books that you're not sure where it came from or what it's doing in your house, but it's there. And I'm neither thrilled nor upset that I read it. It was an interesting read, going into the life of a young girl/teenager in Korea in the late 1970s and 80s. I really know nothing about that time period, so it was educational as it referenced many events and places that I had never heard of before.
However, I found the style a bit discerning. The constant flipping to present and past within pages and paragraphs was a little much. I tend to like more linear stories, but this was well done. I also prefer less musings and more action/dialogue and this work focused more on the former. Overall, solid historical fiction (or fact/fiction, as the author writes it).
