I was fortunate enough to receive an advanced reader copy of this novella from the author in exchange for an honest review. I wasn't quite sure what to expect with this book but I was excited to go back into the world of earthsingers once more. L. Penelope was able to craft an interesting mystery that gives us some background into the Elsira and Lagamiri worlds. This Novella is a little different from Song of Blood & Stone simply because it is more mystery than action and really didn't hold much fantasy other than being in a fantastical world. I would have loved more fantasy aspect but I'm still looking forward to the second full-length book.

All in all, it was a quick read that I can only assume will fit well into the series.

This was a sweet and inspiring novella with a little murder-mystery to go along with it!

I loved seeing a bit of Jack's backstory and the wedding plans for our main characters. It was just a little thing, but it was cute. The story Jack told was heartbreaking, but gives us more of an idea how the tensions between the races in this book built to what they were in book one.

As someone who is still in love with Song of Blood and Stone, this novella did not disappoint. I absolutely loved that we essentially picked back up where the last book ended. Yet I appreciated it gave details from the first book which meant a newbie didn't have to pour over the first book in order to dive into this one.

While I appreciated the first book was more of Jasminda's story , ya girl is tired of women being dangled in her face only for it to become about men, I am happy that we got some back story on Jack. He is such an interesting character. One who has dealt with loss and responsibility from a very young age. Those experiences shaped him into the emotionally intelligent yet sometimes too naive character we saw in Song of Blood and Stone.

The most surprising part was the murder mystery. I had to chuckle because I've been reading JD Robb's In Death series and called myself taking a break from murder, but the joke was on me. Overall it was a great read, and I cannot wait for the next installment in the series.

Review:

This was a great short story, that gives more back story for Jack.
I loved getting to know his character more and reading this short Murder-Mystery.

A highly enjoyable novella that is a both an epilogue to "Song of Blood and Stone" and a prologue to "Whispers of Shadow and Flame". I loved the moments between Jack and Jasminda, and seeing a bit of Jack's past, plus being introduced to Darvyn. I felt the mystery elements were also well done.
