SMOKED MEAT is a brilliant collection of short stories, compelling in their depiction of a world that is both chic and shabby, a crumbling bohemia of yearning and creativity, of frustration and desire in all its forms. It's sharply written, and so convincing in its portrayal of the Montreal demimonde in which the action takes place that it's hard to say what's imagination and what's observation, each being the willing helpmeet of the other. The stories, which are really one big, multi-faceted story, are rich and dark and sparky and revel in their freedom. As a whole, the collection touched me, made me laugh and moved me to tears a couple of times. What more could a reader want?
