Not sure why so many gave this such a high rating. I could not care less about the characters and the plot did not keep my interest at all. I want my time back.

I really enjoyed this story about a confined woman both physically and mentally.
It subtly shows us how patriarcal society and misguided medical practices used to treat (pun intended) women in the 19th century. If you enjoy « mad woman » stories you will enjoy this short one with its creepy gothic atmosphere.

Just seeing the hints of how she’s going to spiral made me so sad. And it was avoidable. I knew how it was gonna go but was hoping against it. So well written. I’m sad.

I really enjoyed this story. It definitely creeped me out and is a great pov from a woman “suffering from hysteria” I really liked the ending especially. I would’ve read a whole novel with this premise

A mentally unwell woman stuck in her bedroom all summer long where all she is allowed to do is stare at the patterns in the yellow wallpaper. Her doctor has prescribed absolute rest with no writing allowed. Yikes. I like how it’s told in an epistolary format when she secretly writes in her journal whenever she can hide it from her husband and maid. It explains why time passes unequally between entries.

As I was reading this I was reminded of the mother of a guy I dated in college. Arlene was a wee bit crazy but got slightly better care from her doctor than the protagonist. Every few months she would grow weary of the paint color in her living room and repaint it something bold like burgundy or emerald or whatnot.  Maybe even yellow.
