A first-hand account of a woman’s descent into psychosis. Imagine battling postpartum depression while being confined to a room where the condition of the wallpaper seems to reflect the state of your mental health. This short story was written in 1892 and it’s a shame how its themes are still relevant today. It speaks to women’s lack of autonomy in a patriarchal society where women often have to fight to be heard and are often gaslit out of believing and sharing their own experiences. All of this being conveyed in just 20 short pages is impressive! 10/10
