Interesting, entertaining, and occasionally irritating. It moved fast and, for the most part, kept me interested, but some of the writing was kind of painful (how many freaking times can Knox have something that he ALMOST remembers, but he just...can't...quite...), and the use of the cliffhanger started getting a little ridiculous. I think I lost track of the number of times we were left "waiting" for some revelation that, honestly, didn't turn out to be all that exciting. I agree with another reviewer who said that Gaille was kind of pathetic - whiny, not particularly brave, I didn't really sympathize with her at all. I thought a lot of the bloodshed at the end was pretty gratuitous, as if Adams felt like he just couldn't go the whole book without killing off a few of his main characters. The ending just left a bad taste in my mouth overall, really, and I did a lot of skimming for the last 25 pages or so. I think Adams was trying to do too much - too many intrigues, too many characters with family members to avenge and mysterious deaths to uncover, too much bullshit. It kind of made finding Alexander's tomb feel kind of pointless and anticlimactic - not at all the same sense of reverence to it that you get, say, in the Da Vinci code, with the discovery of Mary's resting place.
So, overall, an entertaining beach read, but not one I'd recommend to friends, and probably not a book I'll remember a year from now.

Certainly not what you'd call "literature" but it was compelling, I couldn't put it down!
Wow. I'm embarrassed by how much I disliked this book. The author does a great job of explaining European and Egyptian history but struggles mightily crafting a quality narrative. Most readers don't have an in-depth knowledge of archaeological dig sites but the author doesn't seem to care. Details are murky and it was very hard to picture. The many characters all intertwined in a ludicrous fashion. The lead female is just a damsel in distress and its a shame. Overall, a simply deplorable novel.
Smartly written page-turner (thriller) about an Egyptologist in search of Alexander the Great and his tomb. Politics, murder, mythology, and ancient history combine with lots of action to make an adrenaline-rush read. I'll be watching to see what Adams writes next.
Shorter, even fluffier version of a Dan Brown book. Ton of characters, plot lines, plot holes, and flips between characters every 3 pages. Egyptian setting and historical "facts" are fun, most the action sequences are just them kicking someone and running away, or getting caught then kicking someone later and running away. The romance isn't great, a lot of the characters are thin.
If you don't like books about treasure hunting or ancient lost history in a fictional setting then this won't work for you. Sometimes it's nice to read a fluff action mystery, that's about it.

3.5 stars
I liked this book. It was not too long and fast-paced. I wasn't crazy about any of the characters though, and won't be running out to get the next in the series, which is why it got 3.5 stars. I will look for the rest of the series at some time in the future, but feel no urgency or particular attachment to the book. It did the trick of entertaining and I did learn a little bit about archaeology. I would describe this as a far less fantastical version of a Dan Brown book if that makes any sense. Worth a read, if you're looking for entertainment, action, and a tiny bit of romance, but nothing very deep.

A quick read - this book is just waiting to be turned into a Nicholas Cage film...
Jeez this book is bad. You will probably roll your eyes out of your head like I almost did. The plot is ridiculous, the characters are ridiculous and the writing is mediocre at best. There are a lot better action/adventure/archaeology novels out there worth your time.
Could nto put this book down, it was absolutely brilliant. The storyline was fast-paced and thrilling and the characters were perfectly written. A few good unexpected twists and the ending was spot on and very believable. The historical aspect was well researched and accurate but didn't take over the book and was well described. Absolutely loved it.
