I don't read a lot of short story collections, but there were so many on all of the award lists this year that I thought that I should work at least one in before the year ended. This one was the Reading Women Award winner for Fiction this year (2018). I loved the writing and the stories. They drew me in and fascinated me. They filled me with foreboding and wonder. In the end, though they are short stories and they always left me dissatisfied and wanting more. I would go to the next story and try to fill up my wanting with a different story and then that one too would end too soon. If this is the literary technique that was used on purpose by Ms. Sachdeva, then it was very effective. It will definitely make me want to revisit these stories again and again to turn over the few pebbles we are allowed to know to find the why behind them. The magical realism in the stories made me think a lot of Nathaniel Hawthorne's short stories and the supernatural element he always includes in his stories. The people of his stories were always concerned about the "Name of God" as well and trying to define it in their own ways. I will definitely pay attention to further efforts by Ms. Sachdeva.

Imaginative

And, well written, I suppose. I found most of the stories to be too dark and unsettling for my taste.
