Funny for a couple hundred pages, but the jokes just repeat and the flaws get more noticeable as it goes on. The female characters lack and depth and the run of duck jokes and fat jokes just goes on and on.

One of the most uniquely enjoyable experiences I’ve had in fantasy in a long time. Eames doesn’t try to be overly clever; the tropes and archetypes that populate this book are laid out front and center. The characters are all lovely in their own way, and legitimately hilarious. Longtime readers of fantasy should enjoy everything in here. 8.5/10.

It started out as a 5 star read; but halfway through the book I got tired of the recycled jokes (there is only so many times I can read about dying bards without sighing) and the lack of consequences for the characters (
losing a limb is not a problem: you can literally grow a new hand. And don’t you worry about getting an INCURABLE deadly disease: you will stumble upon a cure accidentally
).
“Kings of the Wyld” is something of a fantasy equivalent to Becky Chambers’ Wayfarer series: everyone is a friend, nothing truly bad happens, and you can be sure there is a happy ending waiting.

P.S. “Clay let out a breath he didn't know he'd been holding.”
