Lovely descriptions of the countryside, the farm workers are a laugh, the love story has suitable ups and downs and a fairly satisfying ending, although it feels like Bathsheba gets punished a bit too much for being a woman in charge of her own money with the Drama that ensues. There's also a few too many of those throwaway comments about 'women and their ways' that some classic novels have that took me out of the story a bit! Gabriel is a precious soul and a good egg of the highest order. He gets five stars.

Far From the Madding Crowd is a masterpiece. The characters are gems, the setting is golden, and the writing is just 🥰🤩🤯 words fail me. Thomas Hardy was a true wordsmith. His prose is objectively beautiful and perfectly Gothic.
I highly recommend this to everyone, but especially women. There is a stereotype that “women written by men” are flat, shallow, objectified creatures, and surely that is true of women written by unskilled male writers, but Bathsheba Everdene is no such woman. She is one of the womanliest women I ever read of, and I commend Hardy for his understanding of the opposite sex — both our virtues and vices.
Gabriel Oak is the best, and may I never deal with a man such as William Boldwood ☺️

I survived this book. The old English language and conversational slang had me using the dictionary or just puzzled on nearly every page. That said it is an interesting story and I look forward to the movie that is coming. That's what got me started on this book. That and the belief I need to add some real literature to my reading.
