I knew before starting The Blood of Olympus that I wasn’t ready for it, and boy was I right. Rick Riordan has an insane talent for twisting ancient myths and fitting them into the modern world in ways that just make sense.

In the Blood of Olympus, the crew of the Argo II, now reunited with Percy and Annabeth, are determined to make their way to Athens, where they hope to overthrow Gaia and the giants.

As they traipse across the Mediterranean, Percy, Annabeth, Leo, Piper, Jason, Hazel, and Frank encounter both monsters and mortals, and Riordan somehow manages to bend every instance of both to suit the story.

The true underlying theme in the Blood of Olympus is, undoubtedly, found family. It’s shown through Leo, who feels like a seventh wheel. Through Hazel, who sometimes feels like she’s stuck in the wrong time. Through Nico, who is stubbornly determined to not call either camp his home. Through Reyna, who fears she might be outcast by the Romans for breaking their most sacred law.

The best thing that could have come out of the Blood of Olympus, no matter the outcome of the war, is that at the end of the day, the little group of demigods, no matter Greek or Roman, are together.
