This was a good mystery read that had interesting, well-fleshed-out characters, and that shed light on a premise that is often ignored or not explored with the nuance it deserves: child incarceration. The story is told from the perspective of Mary, a teenage girl who has been incarcerated since she was 9 years old. In so many ways, she's experienced more than most adults will ever have to, but the way she perceives relationships and love really reminds you that she's still just a child. I didn't love the final chapter, but some readers might. This book is great for anyone who's getting into thrillers/mystery novels (I'd say the characters feel realer than they do in most novels of the same genre) and it's appropriate for teenage readers.

I’m give this a solid, it’s okay rating. Good enough to keep me interested, not good enough where I’m going to remember it and think about it in the future. I was expecting a lot better from the tagline, “Mary B. Addison killed a baby. Allegedly.” The ending was decent but not absolutely mind blowing good, it was just okay for me.

This was a great read. I didn’t know it was a story written from the point of view of an unreliable narrator until later in the book. When I finally realized, the entire book seemed to shift into something else entirely. It also made me realize how easy it is for manipulation to occur without even realizing it. This story uncovers horrors of the justice system and uncomfortable truths as well. I encourage everyone to read but caution because there is mention of child death.

This was really enjoyable. The characters are set up well, are interesting and give a sufficiently complex portrayal of people who are on various sides of legality, as well as painting a distressing but organic picture of juvenile homes and the neglect faced by their occupants. I was all-in for a five-star rating for this one until the end twist, which bothered me and once I thought about it, it's because it completely flips the established dynamic and characterization established in the remaining 98% of the book. An excellent debut but I wish we'd committed to the characterization rather than go for the plot twist.

3.5. I was not expecting that ending. Just like all the other reviews I should have braced myself but this was my second Tiffany Jackson book so I was still trying to figure her out. I was intrigued for most of the book but I think I got a little lost on the plot sometimes. I just feel kind of empty now and I need a follow up on what happened next.
