I don’t want to go into a long extended review of what this book is all about.

What I will say is that I thought it touching and sad without going too maudlin. It was also highly entertaining and poignant as Patrick is forced to come out of his self imposed exile (he had very good reasons) to deal with past tragedy as well as the recent loss of his best friend - the mother of his niece and nephew.

Patrick is the main star here (as well he should be), and I loved his personality, how he never talked down to his younger charges and worked together with them, always being their champion, a voice of reason and comfort through the tough times, always with a wonderful charming sarcastic enlightening wit.

Though there is sadness in this, this also had humor, hope, and growth. There are some trials that these characters go through, but they all come out the other side as a solid familial unit, stronger than ever before. Patrick for sure triumphs, and I have no worries that he’ll continue to be a huge and more constant presence in the lives that are most important to him.

Again, just a feel good and uplifting story about finding lost family and purpose, despite heavy losses that could easily slay any one of us, and triumphing in the end.
