Everything was going well until the COUP HAPPENED— The fairy tale story.

Great follow-up to book one! Review to come at some point in time :)

Good Follow Up

Book 2 (one does not have to read book 1 to follow along, but it would be helpful) begins with Captain Theresa Eddings - Reese - leading her crew to a distant planet to establish trade. Hirianthial, resident Eldritch, is attacked and imprisoned (again). The crew of the Earthrise moves to save him, just as powers he did not know he had awaken violently. He decides to return home, and his companions follow. There, on the xenophobic planet of the Eldritch, they are thrown into political warfare and are faced with some difficult decisions about safety, loyalty, and love. Warnings for (implied) rape, (implied) incest, xenophobia.

These are truly fun! I can immerse myself in the world with a writer of such skill and attention to detail and character.

Solid 4 from me. It was a good book with plenty of character development for Reese and Hiranthial. It was a bit jarring the contrast between outer space and the new setting in this book but I enjoyed it. I feel it had less action which made me dock a point but it kinda redeemed itself near the end. I really like how both books so far have had a full story but leave you wanting more despite Rose Point having a more obvious "to be continued" sense of urgency with its ending.

I also read this book in like 4-6 hours? I didn't sleep >.< I couldn't stop reading.

Much better than the first book. Reese might have been too different to even be the same character, but she was much more palatable either way.

This second installment of the Her Instruments series finds Reese and her crew journeying to Hirianthial's home world. I loved the fact that Reese is beginning to come into herself in this installment, and I appreciate the deepening of her friendships with the crew. There's enough politics to keep the book interesting, and it definitely ends on a cliffhanger that made me eager to pick up the next book as quickly as possible.

Another great book in the series. Rose Point is number 2, continuing the story of Captain Reese and her crew. I enjoyed this book even more than the first in the series. It has a very different setting. The entire book is set on the planet of the Eldritch and the crewmember Hirianthial.

The planet of the Eldritch is a stubbornly primitive and feudal society. The crew must step carefully in this xenophobic world. This book is more fantasy romance than space opera.

This is a very well written story. I had a hard time putting the book down. The characters were clearly drawn and their relationships drove the story. Who cares about who, and who can and will help who. We meet the Queen and those loyal to her.

My only criticism is what we hear about the villains. The villains seem one dimensional. They are pure evil, with no explanation or moderation. Fortunately the other characters are so well drawn that I could overlook this one weakness.

I recommend this story for any readers of fantasy and even people like me who lean more toward science fiction. The book should be suitable for readers as young as low middle school. There is only gentle mention of sexual matters and some moderate violence.
