Lemme just write my hater ass review now that reviews have finally opened back up. I NEED to know what happened here. We had typos!! Plot holes! Otherwise intelligent and clever Rooke spending 600+ pages soothing the anger of truly one of my least favorite characters I have ever read SOREN
There was no redemption for Soren. There was only a man becoming more and more unlikeable, abruptly transforming from the asshole in the first book to a different type of asshole in this book. BOOOO THIS MAN and his raging jealousy and his shitty little snarls and his inability to take responsibility for his past, current, or future actions. Why would I want to read Rooke slowly accepting that her future with this man is to become responsible for his horrible temper and not ever have any male friends ever again?? I actually don’t like abusive relationships being sold to me as romance with cute fae male possessiveness. Also the sex was bad anyway??
Do I even need to go into the typos and editing issues?? It was horribly distracting and got worse as the book went on so do with that what you will
I was completely done with this book when immediately after getting married (and having the boring sex) Rooke and Soren immediately discuss: how he was only so mean to her because she was so hot (while being the wrong race) and it made him mad, how horny her dad got for her mom in her wedding dress, and how she’s the perfect wife for him because he’s such a fucking asshole no other woman can stand him and so it’s PERFECT that she is forced to be with him and puts up with his bullshit and doesn’t hold him accountable and so now he doesn’t have to change!!
I mean, Rooke at one point literally internally acknowledges that she’s been forced into marriage to this man by the Fates because she may actually be the only woman who has the patience to fucking suffer him.
Truly, she may be. Because I am not that woman and I will not be reading any more about The Most Miserable Man Who Ever Lived

I am slightly disappointed with this read, I loved the first book of this series but the second, I’m not sure. The plot line and added lore was interesting but there was so much new stuff introduced and it got confusing at times. Also, the romance; I feel like the ending of the “enemies” part of the romance could’ve been done better. So many grammar and spelling mistakes which could’ve been avoided with proper proofreading…. I don’t wanna rate this book low because I loved its sister but also because the plot itself had a great structure to it.
I’m obsessed <3 such a good book and series. CLIFFHANGERS FOR DAYS!!!! Not as bad as Book 1 but I’m holding my breath until the next one srsly so good
Plot holes, inconsistencies, stale romance, pointless dialogue and characters. I am so upset because book 1 was 5 stars for me. What happened!!!!
While I was upset about how this book got delayed and the lack of communication...It was all worth it. When the different witches heeded Rooke's call, I GOT THE CHILLS. When they performed the assai and found out her dad was a blood witch and that the blood witch mother is back I was SCREAMING. AND THEN THE ENDING CLIFFHANGER?! I was already having a heart attack finding out Pemba WAS DEAD BUT THEN?! THE FACT THAT HER FATE IS TO DIE TO KILL KHARL. I am crying screaming throwing up. I loved Soren's character development and the growth of their relationship. I literally cannot wait until the third book.

I am so bloody conflicted about how I feel about this book, so this review is going to be pure chaos, because I’m just going to talk.
First and foremost, I have an unexplainable attachment to this story and these characters. TCOOAC was exceptional, slow in that incredible way the beginning of all fantasy books are. It reminded me so much of Fellowship of the Ring, the introduction of different mythical races, the decades long political drama between each, and also within their own factions- and it had the absolute potential to deliver something incredible.
Unfortunately, book 2 was no Two Towers.
Why was it so long?!?! This needed some heavy editing, and I say that as someone who loves character driven instalments, with an appreciation for the slower plot lines. But 7 pages of Soren and Gage in a prison talking about absolutely nothing was completely unnecessary.
It could have benefitted from a few heavier action scenes thrown in to break up the long travel chapters, because this was an absolute drag to get through.
HOWEVER… J Bree has an absolute talent for writing complex characters with buckets of depth, and I adore Rooke so much. Sorens character development was excellent, and the introduction of the goblins was a highlight for me. I enjoyed a lot of the side characters, I just wish the plot was a bit more engaging, because for a book this size, it needs a decent balance, especially when the first book was also a slow burn.
Will I be reading the 3rd? Absolutely. I’m heavily invested, I was just really disappointed with this one.

She does it again.
JBree is an automatic read for me. Truly. I love all the characters in this world. She is a master.
