“The Fates have chosen a mate for me who will defend this kingdom without hesitation or mercy, as steadfast in her convictions as I am in my own, and though she’s nothing like the mate I was imagining for the long centuries I waited for her, now I can’t fathom a better candidate.”
I wanted to give this a 5 stars so badly because I genuinely had a great time reading this book. BUT there was so many grammatical errors and the ending had me like ???????? I will read the conclusion when it is out though due to having been invested in this world for so many pages already.

Soft dnfing this for now. It's lost its specialness from the first leaving me disappointed and borreeddd
So fucking good, I will never stop recommending this series, and I can’t believe it hasn’t been talked about more. The GROWTH is so good. I can’t believe the twists and turns that I took while reading. THANK GOD they finally worked out their issues, and I’m not usually one for a slow burn for a while book, but this was done so well and made me love them that much more. I love a strong female lead and this gave me exactly what I needed and wanted. Cannot even count the amount of times that I had to stare at the wall while reading this, but in a good way. Absolutely recommend this book to anyone!
This one wasn't as good as the previous book in the series. Truthfully it was a struggle to finish. I was bored many times.
Also, it is predictable. I knew what the ending would be in this book early on, sadly.

I adored this book so much. While the groveling from Soren was not what I thought it was going to be given the end of book 1, I think this works for who Soren is. I'm not sure he could "grovel" to Rooke and I think the mostly organic way they come to terms with their fate worked. Do I think Rooke MAYBE let Soren off a little easy? At times, but I also think it fit with who Rooke is too. Rooke isn't going to make him suffer intentionally so her actions were similar to book 1 while she takes a step back, observes, and helps wherever or whomever she can.
This is most certainly a high fantasy series and while Rooke's and Soren's relationship is the focal point of the book (given their fates), the series thus far has been very much world and character developing focused. There is very little spice in this book (and none in the first book). If you are familiar with Bree, she tends to slow-burn, but she does give you tension beforehand. In ways, this doesn't even have the tension the other books have. We instead get Soren's possessiveness and jealousy from his POV, which reads a little differently while giving that connection beyond the fates demand.
The first half of the book I felt was world and character developing. It's pretty dense in ways because we get some new fates and we're also trying to maneuver around Soren finally understanding Rooke isn't there as a spy or someone to break him from the inside. We have to get through the shift between the two of them to build trust again. However, at 50% of the book...Things significantly shift (maybe a little out of left field, but it was also time) for Rooke and Soren and the story ALSO picks up. I found the latter half of the book much more interesting, action packed, and emotional.
I enjoyed every minute of the book and felt it was all needed; however, the END. Oh my gosh. THE END.
Trust the process they say...Because boy am I trusting in Bree at this point. I've read her entire catalogue and she loves her cliffhangers. She's one of the few authors where I remember all the cliffhangers of her books because they are impactful in either a truth bomb, red herring, or shock factor. This one was...WOW. I'm going with red herring, but I don't know. It's really confusing in ways, but the end with Rooke was, once again, powerful. While book 1's ending left me having a girl crush on Rooke because HOLY COW THAT WAS AMAZING. Book 2's ending left me in an emotional mess with Rooke that deepened my love for her as a character as we learned more about her history. I cried. Then we get the last sentence of the book and my world fell apart. WHAT?! Oh, man, Soren's reaction is going to be such an interesting POV.
There are a lot of questions left to resolve in the 3rd (and supposedly last) book. I cannot wait for it...I'm expecting it to DESTROY me in the best of ways, but I am trusting Bree that she will heal me in the end.
BRING IT! After I've recovered from this end...that will have be in a stranglehold until the next book...

TCOOAC was one of my favorite reads last year. I was disappointed when this one kept getting delayed, and that the release was bumbled around but I was understanding that things happen but when I finally got it, I was disappointed.
PArt of why I liked the first book so much was it felt like a true enemies to lovers, the MCs were on opposite sides of two races who hated each other but Rooke was such a bad ass and took no shit, and was completely in the right. Loved her! I also say was because a lot of that disappeared and she became too demure. Soran's 180 turn from hate to being enamored was too much, too quick. So some of the magic of the first book was gone since the conflict was no longer there as it just evaporated. Soran does become a better character in this book but it's disappointing because I loved Rooke and she suffers. Some more characters get added, both intriguing and confusing to keep track of who is who.
The book was still good until about half way through where it was clearly rushed and needed another editor or something. I reported so many typos, and I can forgive grammar mistakes but I can't forgive phrases such as "magic sauce" making it into the published version. Which combined with an unsatisfied end to the conflict between Rook and Soren made it difficult to get through. I wish it had been delayed MORE if it meant a better overall experience.
