I'm completely hooked on this story and these characters—I absolutely need to know what happens next. That said, I did have some issues with this installment.
The writing felt overly verbose at times, and there were quite a few editing errors throughout. After book 1, I was expecting some serious groveling, but it really didn't deliver on that front. The pacing dragged for me too; I was craving more action to keep things moving.
One thing that bothered me was how Rooke's character felt less compelling here. In book 1, she was such a strong presence, but that seemed to get diluted in this volume.
Despite these frustrations, I'm still eager for book 3 because I'm genuinely invested in these characters.

This really could have been a 5-star read with stronger editorial support. The core story is engaging and interesting—it just needs more thorough editing and revision to reach its full potential.

2nd read - this series is 6 stars easily. I’m sitting here crying over the ending AGAIN and it only got more emotional for me on the second read. J Bree does a few tropes amazingly well and the one I enjoy the most is the ultra powerful FMC with hidden connections who gets more and more badass over time. Rooke steals my breath with her story and I’m as humbled as Soren is reading this. Beauty
ALSO I am so confused about all the negative ratings here. This book is one my TOP TOPS and this blasphemy is not cool
——
Holy shit the ending here and the twist??? Tears. Speechless. Had to tell my boyfriend the entire plot to get across how devastated I was but how amazing this is. NEED BOOK THREE YESTERDAY

3.5 stars, and honestly if I go only by the amount of typos and various errors in the book it would have to be 2 stars. I’m not sure this book was edited at all by how bad it was. On top of the grammatical mistakes, the story took a very confusing turn, with various storylines and explanations added in the mix in a scattered way.
Such a shame because the story and the characters still have so much potential, but it’s not following through that well. I hope the last book of the series can recover and deliver what the first book promised so well.

I am invested in this story and characters really need to know what happens next. I did have some issues with it too, though.
It felt really wordy at times and there were a lot of errors.
I expected groveling after book 1 but it fell flat
The pacing is a little too slow for me. I wanted more action.
The ending was a surprise but also confusing. I’m not entirely sure what happened.
Despite this, I want book 3 and I’m loving these characters. Rooke’s character was so strong in book one, I felt like that got lost a little in this one.
This could have been a 5 star read IF the author had a strong editing team behind her. The story itself is great and interesting. It just needs more editing and revision to make it perfect.

The emotional rollercoaster this book put me through is WILD!!!! The ending when its revealed that 1. Pemba is dead and 2. Rooke will die when she kills Karl is UNBELIEVELABLE. ehat do you mean there won'tbe a happily ever after for the Ravenswyrd coven? What do you mean we aren't getting a wholesome reunion with Pemba? WTF!!!!! Rooke has finally been accepted and established a family, respect and a kingdom and she's going to lose it! I know she' accepted it but i sure haven't. Honestly hope something changes, not sure what but i NEED Soren and Rooke to end up as King and Queen with a flourishing kindom respecting the rituals of the land, with the two of them living both in Yregar and Ravenswryd forest establishing a new coven!!! Such a good book (didn't realise it's the 2/3 which makes it even crazier as usually the middle book is kinda dull but NO! This book had everything I wanted) From the enemies turning to lovers and the alliances friendhips even absolutely loved some of the sassy remarks, absolutely justified but nonetheless had me laughing. Can't WAIT for the final book!!!!
What. The. Fuck.
After 1300+ pages we find out that it was all for nothing? Why does J. Bree give us these cliffhangers? Why is her cruelty so vast?
I might spontaneously combust with all the feelings stewing in my body right now. Rooke has to die? Pemba is dead? Is it just me that didn’t realise that, or was I a total butthead who missed important information? Anyway, in the last chapter so much was revealed that my head is spinning with a whirlwind of theories and honestly, a sprinkle of anger at how long I know I’m going to have to wait for the last book in the series.
It took 1100 pages for Rooke and Soren to kiss, and now she might die. I’m sure J. Bree will find an incredible way around it, but then what if she doesn’t. The fates are what controls their world. What if, in the next book, Soren holds Rooke in his arms as she takes her last breaths, and she just dies. I think J. Bree would lose me as a most loyal fan (of all of her series) forever. I think it might shatter my greed and hunger for reading for a long while. After going into one of my biggest reading slumps ever following the tragic, unexpected ending of Iron Flame by Rebecca Yarros, I fear the end of Rooke may be the end of me. Lord help me if my greatest fears are what plays out. The wait may kill me before that happens anyway, maybe the fates of our world will be cruel/kind enough to grant me that much.
The book did feel a little bit rushed. In my opinion, it could’ve been better planned and better executed. I got this through my Kindle Unlimited account at around 11:00 pm on the 21st of May, and was only able to finish it at 9:00 pm on the 26th. It took a surprisingly long time (in the regard to my speed reading) for me to finish. God I might actually die at that ending though.
After all the mess with the April release date, and then it not releasing on Amazon on the 19th of May, the book was not the best quality that it should or could have been. She had an entire 12+ months to write this, if you include the time it would’ve taken to get The Crown of Oaths and Curses published. With the bonds that tie series in mind, I truly believe that J. Bree could have done better. I say again that it felt rushed, the plot slightly unstructured and the sudden shift in attitude from Soren kind of unrealistic. Yes, he realised he needed to grovel like hell, but it was too insta-lovey. They went from enemies to unrequited love too fast. The book had mistakes all throughout it, and it just could’ve been so so so much better. After the struggles with the Amazon site, and the release date being pushed back with no word, I’m disappointed in this author for her role in these issues. I’ve supported her, bought and (glowingly) reviewed/rated her books on different platforms and as a reader, it feels like a let down. I’m sure many others share my feelings, and I’m also sure she has lost some fans because of this. She very nearly lost me.

I again really enjoyed this, although not as much as the first one as I felt it dragged a bit more and there were some unnecessary scenes which didn’t add much. Also, a few new plot lines introduced but normally abandoned or not seen through.
