I enjoyed how the author was able to deeply immerse me into the German village. At first I found some descriptions lengthy, but realized later that they were providing interesting elements to the setting. The book moved at a nice pace and was very interesting.
I wish the love story between Christine and Isaac was more developed. I would have loved to experience their first interaction with each other, and more as they fell in love. I think it would have strengthen their love more.
The book was deeply sad in several parts, but I think having a more filled out love story would have created even more heartache.
I enjoyed the story and the plot. The author in her note said she had to cut some parts. I wonder if some of these parts had what I felt like was missing.
I also wish Marie’s part of the story didn’t feel as rushed.

A deeply moving and tragic love story set in WWII Germany. I couldn't put it down.

I don't think I've ever given up on a book so fast. The audiobook narrator was awful, which didn't help, but the main character was TERRIBLE. Selfish and irresponsible, the worst sort of romantic teenager, and I'm supposed to buy it? It felt like the author was trying to be politically correct while also talking about why civilians didn't do more, but where she landed was a bunch of characters I couldn't take another second with.
Minor: Sexual content

Ehh, couldn't really get into this story. Slow moving and I couldn't finish. Only read to chapter 7 .

This was a good story regarding the ordinary German family forced into serving Hitler and country. The author drew from experiences her mother and grandmother had during the war with shortages and Allied bombing.
