This book packs a punch. It shows the emotion and the anger about police brutality, BLM, & racism. My only issues were pacing feeling off and a few parts of the ending I was not a fan of.

I started this book a few hours before I learned of my brother’s passing, so it was hard to get back to it and finish it. I finally did, and it was a very good read. It gave me some really important insight on what life is like for the black youth of America. And by important.. I mean heartbreaking, unjust, and awful.

How powerful and real and scary this book was to read. Those who loved The Hate U Give, Long Way Down, Ghost Boys, Dear Martin and more will love Jay Coles’ debut novel based on true events of his life inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement. I loved this book and hope it encourages others to take a long, hard look at what’s going on in our black communities. #weneeddiversebooks #blacklivesmatter

Confession- I picked this up because I saw the artwork of Charlotte Day on the cover and loved it. A very important story of voices not always heard. The book deals with race, grief, family and violence, and does so in earnest. Well done.

this book has been on my radar for the past few years so i'm glad i finally got to get around to it. this was a very realistic story that i would describe as heartbreaking yet beautiful. it touches on rough topics like racism and police brutality but it also covers the topic of not letting anyone silence you/making you feel small and fighting for what you want.

the reason i didn't give this a 5 star is because i felt like it was missing something. i have a feeling that it has to do with the pacing?? at times it did feel slow and some things were left unanswered which felt off considering it's a standalone but besides that i really enjoyed it and i now get why all the black kids at school were eating it up lol.

A tough story but beautifully told. Written from the main characters point of view. Easy read.

I was given a copy through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I have recently read The Hate You Give and I believe fans of that book would support and enjoy this book as well. This is a book written to reflect the current climate on issues going on in our country and is definitely a needed book. It gives some a voice and am connection while it opens the eyes of others. For me, it opened my eyes to the reality others face. I gave this book three stars and liked the message of peace and understanding.
