Definitely a dark read (check out the trigger warnings) but honestly so unique- and heartening in unexpected ways

After a traumatic experience, Sister Holiday is determined  to start her life over again. But the fire follows her. And even though this time it’s not her fault, someone’s determined to pin it on her.

This story features both a cat and a dog. One lives, one dies. The death is off-page and non-graphic, but traumatic nonetheless.

This was such a refreshing take on the mystery genre. I liked Holiday a lot as a narrator, even when she was talking about her mistakes and transgressions I still wanted to hear her out. I also really liked the descriptions of New Orleans and the secondary characters, who all felt like three-dimensional real people. The main negatives were that I felt like the plot kind of dragged on and there were a few too many red herrings for my liking. The ending was cathartic enough but I still felt like there were unanswered questions. Overall, I really liked this book and I’m excited to read the next in the series—I do hope it’ll be a little more punchy than this one.

I really loved the premise of this book: lesbian, tattooed, rock-and-roll nun solves an arson in her New Orleans convent school. I was sold. And this book delivered a memorable main character in Sister Holiday and her array of fellow nuns, as well as a vibrant, mystical and lyrical depiction of New Orleans. I was ready to give it four or five stars - but the last third of the book just didn't deliver. The villain came out of nowhere and simply felt unjustified, traumatic scenes felt like unnecessary additions to the overall plot, and the ending left me unsatisfied. It's a shame, because I adored the tone, setting and characters in the book!

There is content that I couldn't get past, that disturbed my experience. What started a NoLa teacozy murder, took a swift dive into themes I just was not prepared for, which is my fault for not researching more thoroughly before downloading it (audiobook read by Mara Wilson, who is an excellent reader), but shouldn't a reader be able to look at a standard back cover and some reviews and have that be enough? Who wants homework? Trigger Warnings aren't going to hurt the story, I promise you.
