Holy cats, this was so much more and better than I ever expected it to be. It's cozy mystery + bit, but not full thriller or gore. Imagine if you will, a queer, tattooed, younger gen x or elder millennial punk, who loves women and smoking and through circumstances becomes a nun, at a catholic school. And then give her a hankering to solve mysteries and you've got Sister Holiday. Can't wait to read more of this series.

First of all, this book is unbelievably slow. Halfway through the book and they still hadn't found any serious clues despite it being so obvious!
I guessed it literally from the beginning after the first fire that it was Sister Augustine, but you're telling me it takes 90% of the book for Holiday the "super sleuth" to remember Augustine smelled of burn cream?? Absolutely unbelievable!
and despite it being about a lesbian nun (although I did think she was funny from time to time) it really didn't do much for representation either.

Over a sweltering New Orleans summer, a series of fires plagues the Sisters of the Sublime Blood and their associated school, St. Sebastian’s.  Determined to catch the culprit is Sister Holiday, a queer punk Maria von Trapp, who, between playing guitar and helping kids, has broken a commandment or two.  It’s actually not that uncommon for nuns to be radical, and the sisters in Holiday’s order are no strangers to run-ins with the law.  But whose law comes first—God’s or man’s?  This women-led story highlights struggles of incarceration, queerness, poverty, and addiction, with a few lovely Easter eggs for the Catholics among us.  Sister Holiday’s love for the divine feminine, despite everything, is inspiring.

After a traumatic experience, Sister Holiday is determined  to start her life over again. But the fire follows her. And even though this time it’s not her fault, someone’s determined to pin it on her.

This story features both a cat and a dog. One lives, one dies. The death is off-page and non-graphic, but traumatic nonetheless.

I heard "queer nun detective" and said "give it to me" but I didn't enjoy this book as much as I anticipated. The homage to Chandler-esque mysteries almost veers past homage and into parody. Sister Holiday is a character I know I would like under other circumstances, but her narration is so indulgent and over-written that I was not able to be submerged in the character and the story.

I did enjoy Holiday's relationship with Riveaux, and the overall plotting picks up towards the end, but the ending nonetheless felt rushed, with characters' attitudes towards each other turning on a dime.
I also called the murderer/arsonist early on, not because of breadcrumbed evidence (the main case-solving clue was presented right at the end of the book), but because she was the only character that Sister Holiday didn't suspect for a moment, thus making my correct call much less satisfying.
