Neat concept and I wanted to enjoy it but it felt like it was treading water for the first half and then raced to fit every possible racism into the second half

There are definite moments of brilliance, and I suspect quite a bit of nuance was "last in translation".
If you are a fan of Czech sci-fi, you will certainly want to read this. It's more of a parable than a novel, and very much reminds me of some of Stanislaw Lem's work.

This is one of those books I had to read for a college class on Eastern European history since 1914. It has stayed with me ever since as representative of the Czechs' biting satire, especially towards religion. It remains one of my favorite books of all time and is a must-read for, well, everyone.
