Multiple magical systems, characters that grow slowly, and general lore that all start off with numerous lovely but individual strands... which then weave together more and more, tighter and tighter, until they're all so skillfully linked that it's startling to remember that the first few books were mistaken as so standalone, and you're looking at a completed tapestry which is a beautiful and heart touching fantasy epic.

Zifnab, Fizban,  Zanfib, my buddy, my pal, our eternal savior and pain in the ass... you are the ultimate goat. May you always find your hat.

Throughout these books, my favorite part has been the intertwining of Sartan and Patryn and the characters' growing realization that no one is completely wrong or completely right. In this one, things really came to a head, with Haplo coming to some startling realizations about himself and the people around him. I'm definitely excited to read the last book (have already started, in fact), and can't wait to see how this series will wrap up.

I think my favorite of the series so far. New characters mixed in with the core ones. Cliff hanger at the end to set up the final installment in the series.

One of the best books of this series.

Still way to much rehashing of old material. If you filtered out all of the back references and retellings the book would be half it's size. Often tries to be too cute.
