Awfully boring with lots of disgusting male characters. I doubled the audio speed to power through because the next ones are supposed to be significantly better.

I spent probably the first 40% of this book almost ready to not continue reading it. It did get more interesting and the added action and stressful situations made it a decent read. That said, there's a lot of toxic misogyny, physical/sexual/emotional abuse, and a main character that is difficult to not to want to scream at. I also think that her naivety and messed up view of people/herself & situation is sort of the point though, so if you decide to read this I'd say just be prepared to be a bit frustrated. I'm assuming the following books in the series will see some character growth and I look forward to it!

This is a fairly dark book and is not for the faint of heart. As I read this, I was often fearful for the main character and rooting for her as I turned every page.

Not the strongest writing; the metaphors are weak and it definitely feels like the author stretched one book into a series needlessly. This whole book was build up for the next one.

I'm not a fan of the main tension point of a book being "is she going to get brutally raped or not?" It is an unpleasant anticipation for me

Trigger warnings are there for a big reason so make absolutely sure you've read them before you read the book itself.
I feel like I read this quite steadily, but honestly, it's just so slow?
Auren is a pretty dull protagonist to have to spend time with, she's obviously deep in her Stockholm syndrome, but she doesn't really have a personality beyond PTSD and worshipping Midas. I loathe so many of the characters in the book, literally all the men are disgusting (except maybe Sail but based on the themes of this book, I knew his purpose from line one) with little to no redeeming features.
Some positives however. The world seems thought out, the politics of the kingdoms and the fae world also have consideration to them, and the motives of the characters (except maybe Auren herself) are relatively clear.
What that doesn't change is how dragged out this all is and from other reviews I've seen, it really doesn't need to be for the series.
