This one was dark but I finished it very quickly because I really wanted to see bad things happen to men in power. However, unfortunately, your girl Auren does appear to be allergic to making good decisions. Could someone please kick Midas in the nuts.

A very cool twist on the Midas myth. Auren is the beloved saddle of King Midas. Gilded in gold from her hair to her toes, she is a symbol held above all others in the fourth kingdom. The king, her lover, had his eyes set on conquest and expanding the fourth kingdoms reign into other areas of the country. We end with her being captured by Snow pirates to be sold to the highest bidder, but another has their sites on her already. A fae general for the King of Rot has intercepted the Snow Pirate’s plans and has taken Auren and the other saddles with him.

This was a “reread,” I didn’t eat it up quite as fast as the first time, but I was still as eager to continue every time. Even as one of the weakest in the series it’s still so captivating to me.

my favorite character (and the best character imo) dies.
Snow pirates are bastards and if the other two side characters with personalities end up dying too I shall revolt.
The ribbons are cool and Midas seems an impulsive, ruthless dick.
(pretty sure this is vague enough to not actually spoil anything but hey)

Double cliffhanger ending
Pretty dark
Still gunna read book two though

I'm not a fan of the main tension point of a book being "is she going to get brutally raped or not?" It is an unpleasant anticipation for me

I felt like a lot didn’t happen in this book and it was a lot of Auren complaining about life. I’m glad that she started to take charge of her life and see that she has been consistently failed by the men she encounters
other than Sail. I loved him

I don’t really like Midas and I don’t trust him. He gives me the ick and seems emotionally manipulative to someone who is naive and traumatized. I hope to see Auren get him in the future.

I’m intrigued enough to continue but this book was a little meh for me.
