Really easy read and such an interesting look into the mentality of early Australia. This guy really had an incredible life, i don't know how he escaped death that many times. Cannot ignore the insane casual racism in this, Australia has really been built on the idea that people of colour are lesser. Wtf Australia will we ever get our shit together

I'd actually like to give this book 3.5 stars, but I can't so I'll give it the benefit of that extra .5 star. I enjoyed the history, the depth, and the clear story-telling voice, but the editing felt a bit strange in places to me. I also felt a little like I was reading a book assigned for school, it just felt like that sort of read (like when you read the Scarlet Letter in the U.S. for 10th grade English). I do feel like I've been left with a good picture a slice of history and life from Western Australia from the early 1900's until about WWII, in an easy to digest format.

This memoir is the quintessential Aussie story: working in the bush, shooting dingos and roos, playing Aussie Rules, fighting at Gallipoli, poking fun at the English, and basically everything else I associate with Australian history. Having visited Australia, reading more about the post-convict history of certain places, in particular Perth and Western Australia, was really interesting to me. The narrator was very engaging and seemed like the kind of person I'd love to know. The end of the book that focused on his adult life felt a little rushed (I felt like early minor characters were given more time and detail than his wife), but this did keep the story at a manageable length. Other than that, I have no complaints.

A fascinating glimpse into the hardships and solidarity of early white Australia.
