Boring, VERY boring. But I like boring books it’s fun just seeing someone do day to day things, although I did almost DNF it a couple of times. Really disliked the obsessive mentioning of Maiyre (or however it’s spelt) breasts, but again it’s probably just because this is a murakami book once you read enough of them you are desensitized to the odd sexual stuff. Also the character development is minuscule?

The first half of this book made me so happy. It was classic, dreamy Murakami- it put me in a certain sort of *mood*. The climax of the book was boring, though, and it’s really disappointing how poorly Murakami writes about females and how women think. All the stuff about young teen breasts (or lack of breasts) was really off-putting too.

I wonder if this is the moment where I stop staying murakami is one of my favorite authors. Ever since that one great novel (wind up bird) I have never experienced the thrill of reading him again. 1q84 was a real good read too, but what came before and especially after didn’t do it for me.

This is a lengthy novel, normally the cooking, reading, driving soothes me. But there is 400 pages of that here. Too much. Still no reason to get upset. It’s the characters that annoy me. Everyone in a small mountain town knows Russian writers and classical music and gestapo history. Come on... and then there are the logical flaws that are covered up by halfhearted explanations.

Sure there was some interesting mystery and luckily more than in the “colorless”, but it isn’t deep enough.

This is the point where I stop automatically buying the next M novel.

Boring in the beginning, in the last third it starts to pick up the pace and many plot points are still not concluded by the ending or are abandoned out of nowhere. Very surreal and crazy. The bell, the metaphor world, the Commendatore and Long Face were amazing. The man with the white Subaru Forester and Tomohiko Amada's "ghost" were eerie, honestly the whole last third was eerie and creepy (in the best sense possible). I still want to know what was up with Menshiki.

2.5

Strange, strange book. Too repetitive and in need of a serious edit. Some parts were well done but others seemed like they had been regurgitated straight from Wikipedia (the parts about the Anschluss)
All in all I’m glad it’s over.
