Similar to other Murakami books, I've often found myself wondering what I just read.

If this book feels like a whole lot of nothing, you're not wrong. That being said, there's something charming and engaging about his writing style. The plot of KC unwinds in unusual ways, but with no punch at the end. I found KC to be similarly intriguing as another one of his behemoths, 1Q84.

Should you finish KC, re-read the preface. That gave it an extra star for me.

The worlds Murakami creates are like literary comfort food for me - so to that extent, I was looking for something familiar and this served that purpose well. I could have used fewer gratuitous sex scenes and descriptions of teenage girls.

Okay I actually really enjoyed this book. It started off really strong, a bit slower paced than I typically would go for but just enough to keep the story flowing. I do have to say, Murakami has an odd obsession with breasts. Fair to say he's a boob guy lol I just don't think any mention of breasts that he had made were really necessary.
mysterious relaxing slow-paced

Another excellent book by Murakami. I enjoy that the main character is a painter, and his creative process is featured predominantly in key scenes; and that the plot revolves around his attempts to understand both a painting he has found, and the evolution and direction of his own work. Murakami explores creativity, self understanding, and loneliness in this. I felt a couple of practical-level plot points were glossed over near the end, that deserved to be explored and resolved. Otherwise, five stars.

Definitely one of the more ‘tame’ and simplistic Murakami works that I’ve read thus far. Was reading this and Demian by Hesse simultaneously and both had similar elements that worked in parallel ways which enriched the experiment that much more.
