I ended up feeling such a fondness for this book, but it was a total slog. I was so disappointed. I cannot white place what was missing from this book that has made me love other Murakami books.

Beautiful story with fantastical aspects, with a unique take on the world. Knocked half a star off for the following reason:
I think he should have revisited the faceless spector scene from the start of the story, showing the main character finishing his portrait. He really did an excellent job of 'closing the circle' except for that.

Living the life a painter, who deals at some point with ghosts of a type and many strong characters who talk about philosophy of life and art.

surprisingly this is now one of my favorites from Murakami. the author tends to incorporate magic into some but not all of his works, and this one was heavy with the surrealism. although it's SO LONG and took me forever, the plot truly is intricate and fascinating, and about 1/3 of the way through, when all the characters are introduced, is when it starts to finally get rolling. i had not seen the label of "a homage to Great Gatsby" prior to finishing the novel, but it is clear as day and i am surprised i didn't actually recognize the similarities while reading. that's how similar they are. (though fitzgerald couldn't afford to throw in the nonsensical twists or the hundreds of pages with meaningless descriptions.) when i first read 1Q84, i was in a trance afterward and eventually named it my favorite of all time. i feel similarly now with Killing Commendatore. the ending saddens me though, simply because i am bad with change, even when it is for the best..
