It doesn’t usually take me a long time to finish books, and I think this took me a long time for a reason.

For the most part, it was way longer than it needed to be. I am a fan of word vomit, unnecessary observations, and figurative language that adds charm to the narrators POV. Murakami has some gems of quotes in here that bumps this up from a three star to a four star. However, I could’ve done without the frankly terrible descriptions of women (especially the little girls in this book) that almost made me quit reading it.

The plot kept me engaged the entire time. In my opinion, the ending was not well set up and rushed (weird considering the page count) as well as generally not resonating super well. Murakami did a surprisingly good job tying up loose ends of all the disjointed side plots in this thing in a way that was coherent for me, but I didn’t leave this book with a final message or theme.

The things said in this book resonate with me. I don’t know if I necessarily love this book for the content that resides within it, but I do like the way reading it made me feel. The way Murakami writes feels so natural and different from anything else I’ve seen, almost like it’s another language within itself.

This plot by a different author probably would’ve ended up being a DNF. But somehow, I think I really liked it.

Another Murakami novel, another world to fall into, forgetting my very own reality.

This one took a while to finish, not because it was a behemoth in size, but because the set up in the first 100 pages did not engage me like other Murakami novels. When you climb the yawn-hurdle, you immediately jump into the meat of the novel, and, once again, crash into a bundle of yawns.

It seemed like the editor got a little lazy with this one. There were parts in the novel that repeated themselves word for word as if readers have dementia through the entire plot. It reveals the ghost strings of the puppet that Murakami did not write this linearly, but in parts as if he himself needed little reminders of what has or hasn't happened through the novel.

The last half of the novel needed some cuts because it took too damn long to get to what felt like a lackluster end.

It's not the best Murakami novel, but it's definitely got all the best parts of a Murakami novel, your oddball girl that leads you into trouble, deep dark holes, mystery, and gnome-like friends.
