The story was really typical Murakami, but I haven't gotten bored of it yet.
I really liked the atmosphere and scenery described. It was kind of moody and isolated with nature around, but with glimpses of modern citylife.
The characters were interesting and somewhat unique (except the mandatory, too bright for their age little girl, main character who's lost in some way, and the random woman the main sleeps with).
Also I personally liked the painting aspects of the story, since I paint and draw myself.
One annoying thing about the main character was that at some points he'd be totally fine, not at all nonplussed with impossible things happening, but at the same time he couldn't grasp some of the smaller or obvious things. Non-spoiler example:
- Sees a ghost: "oh a ghost"
- Ghost knows his name: "How can it be that this ghost knows my name?"
When these kinds of moments happened I just brushed it off as the character being in mentally unstable state.
Overall I enjoyed the (audio)book, not the best of Murakami, but definetely not the worst.
Read as an audiobook, narrated by Kirby Heyborne.
