The Dark Wives

I've never read a Vera Stanhope book or seen the TV series. I gradually got to know Vera as the story unfolded, and found her quite fascinating. But along with her team, I was frustrated by her tendency to keep everything to herself. As we neared the end, I felt as confused as the two team members who were blundering around unsure of what they were supposed to be doing to find Chloe. The witch hunt event would make superb TV, but somehow it didn't grip or excite me. The actual reveal, which Vera and Charlie had kept to themselves, was not too surprising except for the perpetrators. I enjoyed the plot and getting to know Vera, but found the pace a bit slow at times.

I love crime scene books , it was well written , was dragged on for long , I couldn’t even guess who the culprit was , I loved it

Another great novel in the “Vera” series, highly recommended! It is interesting to compare Vera (and Joe) as presented in the novels compared to how they present on the TV series.

Loved it.

An engaging mystery with procedural tendencies. I always want to know a little more about Vera and her colleagues.

This is the first Vera Stanhope I've read. I watched the series and enjoyed it, so I figured I'd read one of the books. It's uncanny how well the book is reflected in the series. That said, the book can cover so much more than a one-hour episode can, and I really appreciated the further depth and breadth the novel offered. I will definitely read another book by Ann Cleeves - regardless if it's part of the Stanhope series or not.
