This took about half the book for me to get into it, but it ended up being a very compelling story of a man vs tiger, nature vs agrarian society in rural Thailand. A very breathless pace to the writing style.

the format is really fascinating... basically no plot just extremely smooth transitions through storytelling for the first hundredish pages (still very inchresting) and then the final seventyish are a cohesive and really gripping series of events. its written in such a way that you feel like the book is talking to you (the main narrator is really charming) so the author & translator did a great job conveying oral storytelling through a written medium

Discovered this book in a bookstore in Bangkok and what a fascinating read about the jungles of Thailand, with folklore, cultural traditions, and a hint of supernatural. Beautiful prose and captivating storytelling. Highly recommend!
“The sarapi tree outside our hut adorned itself with innumerable white flowers, which later dropped and dotted the hut’s and the barn’s and the cattle shed’s roofs, the rest carpeting the ground. Cicadas trilled, and crickets and their cousins chirped, and swarms of bees buzzed as they flew about ever in search of nectar, and everywhere flitted kaleidoscopes of butterflies.”

Oh boy. At first I struggled to get into this, the opening 60 pages or so meanders around people, places, folktales, but when Town starts to tell *the* story things crystallise.
The story of the elephants left me wanting a word for humanity that's species-agnostic. As the story progresses I was left wanting a similar word for inhumane.
We see the relationship between man and nature unfurl in parallel to that of a man and his nature. The ending gave me big feels and the seeming meanders of the early part come full circle as you reflect on where things end.
