The main character does not really grow as a character , the other characters just fit into a trope and also do not develop. I was really hoping for more focus on the character and her magik and the ability to make decisions for her family based on intellect rather than just running away from the problem.

River Woman, River Demon is a heavy, darkly magical story that still manages to hold onto hope and love. Eva is a very challenging narrator, as it’s not always clear to her or to the reader what she can believe. I found this an interesting approach to storytelling! There are a lot of moving parts as Eva’s story unfolds, some of which are frustratingly predictable and others that definitely surprised me as they were revealed. The brujería and Hoodoo elements were the best parts of this book. 

my main complaint is that it was WAY too obvious to suddenly bring Sammy back. From the moment he showed up I was suspicious

A refreshing blend of magical realism and mystery/thriller centered around brujeria and other cultural Magick, and being haunted by past trauma. The characters were complex and frustrating yet sometimes relatable. Who can you really trust in life; can you even trust yourself? And as a foodie and lover of Latin American cuisines, the food descriptions were awesome.
