💬: "The breath slammed out of her lungs. Flames shot through her body, from her breast to her deepest core. The strange roaring was back in her head. Need was on her. Not some gentle emotion, not a pleasant feeling, but a raging tidal wave of hunger, of craving."

The Awakening by Christine Feehan is a novella and it's the first story in her series "Leopard People". Maggie inherits a house in the jungle and if I read this correctly, she just "wakes up" or "awakens" in the jungle (I'm unsure of how she actually got there.) Maggie is on the cusps of a physical and mental evolution, and she meets a man named Brandt who's supposed to help, he also says he's her mate.

It was really evident that this was a novella with the rushed pacing. The two main characters talk for what seems like a day and after that, it seems like Maggie already trusts him. At one point Maggie mentions that she used to be asexual (or at least she thought she was asexual) but now she's having sexual cravings for Brandt and she can't explain why. Before evening knowing if she was interested Brandt kind of flashes her while he sits in the nude in her house or bungalow, he claims that she's his mate so I guess he thinks this is acceptable.

The spicy scenes were alright, it was hard to get into them because the male protagonist was so pushy with his sexual advances, the part where he surprises and flashes her with his nude body really bothered me, he didn't even know if she was truly interested at that point. I'm giving the spicy scenes two chilies 🌶️🌶️ out of five chilies

Overall this story was a bit strange and baffling. I wish the pacing was a little smoother, and it would have been nice if we saw the characters interact with each other outside of their sexual cravings. I will read the next book in the series and give this series another chance, as of now I'm giving THIS novella 2.5 out of 5 stars.

Christine Feehan is a master at taking everyday ordinary people and locations and adding a fantasy twist to it. She’s taken the already exotic Borneo and created a people, a species, that is both complex and simple!

This was very fast-paced but an easy read.

Brandt is possessive, attractive, intelligent and very willing to do whatever it takes to get what he wants…be it safety for the rain forest and it’s animals or his mate.

Maggie is intelligent, emotional, well-educated, and thrust into a situation that turns her world upside down.  I feel she adapted very quickly, but I can’t discount that some of that was her following her leopards instincts.

The steamy scenes are very well written and this was a very enjoyable read.

This novella was just ok. It felt very rushed, and I didn't have time to connect with the characters. But I will give the next book a shot, since this is a short prequel and the next boom is full length. Here's to hoping that one will be better.

Decided to re-read this one on kindle.

Brandt lures Maggie back to the rainforest (where she was born). She's already started the change ... and she's completely unaware that she's a leopard.

There's an "off" leopard who thinks he can kill Brandt and get Maggie.

It's short and sweet ... and a bit stalker-ish ... but Maggie rolls with the changes in her and comes to terms with her life and accepts Brandt.

I'd forgotten Drake is introduced in this short story.

This was one packed up short-story and intro to the Leopard People series. Feehan did an excellent job with it.

The Awakening is a short novella and is a prequel to the amazing Leopard People series.

Everytime a new book comes out in this series, I re-read the whole series so you can imagine how many times I have read this.

Maggie is lured back to the place of her birth in the middle of a rainforest.

Brandt is is a predatory male who knows the secrets of her birthright. He also knows she is his mate and wants her where he can be near to her and claim her.

This book is filled with sexual tension, especially when Brandt brings the mangoes and ice into play.

I normally love Christine Feehan. I know it's a prequel and a short story, but this was a miss for me. Because I haven't read this series before, the story starts in a way that you know you're missing some world building and backstory.
